Bakery and cafe closes down in Coventry city centre

Image

A BAKERY and cafe has closed in Coventry city centre after just six months.

The Kings Bakery and Cafe, in Smithford Way, opened in November at the site of the old Three Cooks bakery, which closed two months earlier.

The business is owned by a Wolverhampton couple who also run a bakery and cafe in King Street, Bedworth.

Birthdays card shops to close at Leamington and Stratford

COLLAPSED retailer Clinton Cards will close 44 stores this month – including two at Leamington and Stratford.

Administrators Zolfo Cooper say 19 Clinton stores and 25 shops belonging to its sister business Birthdays will shut before the end of May, with the loss of 300 jobs.

These include Birthday stores in Leamington and Stratford, although other stores in Coventry and Nuneaton have escaped the first round of closures.

It is believed a decision over the remaining stores will be finalised over the coming weeks.

Administrators also announced redundancies at the company’s head office in Essex – affecting 66 workers.

Peter Saville, joint administrator and partner at Zolfo Cooper, said: “We have received expressions of interest from a number of third parties and are confident that the remaining retail estate will be better placed going forward.

“It appears unlikely that we will be able to find a buyer for the majority of the Birthdays stores and our analysis highlights that we cannot justify continuing to trade certain Birthdays and Clinton Cards stores into June.

"As a result, there is no alternative option but to close these 44 stores in May.”

Cafe Giardino becomes seventeenth eatery to close in Coventry city centre

Image

A CAFE has been closed in Coventry city centre after the company behind it went into administration.

Cafe Giardino, in the Lower Precinct, is among 17 cafes and restaurants to have closed their doors.

It comes after Town Centre Restaurants struggled to pay its debts after a financial review.

The firm, also behind the Auberge restaurants and Azzuro bars, announced 22 of its outlets have been sold to joint administrators Fraser Gray and will remain open.

But the remaining outlets, including Coventry’s Cafe Giardino which opened in 2002, have now closed with a total loss of 90 jobs after not being included in the sale.

Brian Hughes, operations manager for the Lower Precinct, says he is hopeful the empty unit will be snapped up quickly after several potential buyers have come forward.

Speaking about the closure, he said: “There was certainly a full-time manager and three or four members of staff. It all happened so quickly.

“The administrators came in and about an hour later the cafe was closed. It was surprising for us too.

“It’s always disappointing when we lose another retailer but my understanding is there are several retailers that have shown an interest in the unit so I am now optimistic.

“There is a lot of doom and gloom around the retail industry but certainly there are still businesses out there that are doing well.

“I hope we get someone in there soon.

“We have got to remain positive – it’s got to be onwards and upwards from here.”

Founded in 1992, Town Centre Restaurants had grown from one site in Bromley to employing 330 staff across 39 locations including its head office in Enfield, London.

Administrators Zolfo Cooper were called to review the company’s financial options in November last year but no acceptable buyers were found and it was wound up.

A spokesman for Fraser Gray, joint administrator of Zolfo Cooper, said: “It is regrettable that in order to safeguard the business and enable it to be well placed for the future, it has been necessary to close a number of cafés and restaurants.

“However, we are pleased to have effected the sale of 22 sites and the head office preserving approximately 240 jobs in this very difficult economic climate.

“We wish everyone involved in the new company every success for the future.”

London-based lettings agent, Capital Retail, who have been appointed for the sale of the unit in Lower Precinct, say it would be open to offers from interested parties within the next few weeks.

Monsoon in Coventry city centre's Precinct to close

MONSOON in Coventry city centre's The Precinct will be closing its doors for good on Friday.

The shop, which has been selling sale items only for several weeks, has now put up signs in its windows telling customers of the closure.

The nearest stores for Monsoon customers now will be in Nuneaton, Leamington or Rugby.

Monsoon declined to comment on the reasons for the closure or whether any jobs would be affected.

The unit is owned by private company CIP Property (AIPT) Limited.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said the authority was sad to see another store in the city centre go but hoped another business would soon take its place, adding: “The current economic climate is having an effect in one way or another on a lot of retail companies, and it is sad to see this happening all over the country.

“In Coventry the retail vacancy rate is currently lower than the West Midlands average and is broadly reflective of the national average.

"I hope that the privately owned company that owns this outlet and many others in the Upper Precinct are able to find another top quality business to enhance the shopping experience in Coventry.”

Coventry and Warwickshire jobs axed as JJB Sports confirms local closures

Image

AROUND 70 jobs have been axed across Coventry and Warwickshire after ailing retail giant JJB Sports collapsed into administration.

A total of 133 stores were closed yesterday – including all sites in Coventry, Nuneaton and Rugby – resulting in the loss of more than 2,200 jobs across the UK.

Only 20 stores, the brand and website were saved – securing around 550 jobs – after a deal was agreed to sell part of the business to Sports Direct International.

Leamington’s JJB Sports shop at the Royal Priors Shopping Centre is the only local store to remain open as part of the deal.

In Coventry, 37 redundancies have been announced, with 13 in Nuneaton and 18 in Rugby. Four staff members across the stores are being retained to assist the administrators.

And from the Coventry Observer:

The two shops at Gallagher Retail Park and Central Six will close immediately.
