Boots announce hundreds of job losses

Image

High street chemist Boots has announced that up to 500 jobs could be at stake as they announce job cuts that could affect Coventry’s three stores.

According to reports, between 300 to 500 assistant manager jobs are set to go at the company’s larger stores in a bid to reduce their running costs.

Formal consultations have reportedly begun with those who will be affected.

There are three Boots stores located in Coventry at Arena Park, Central Six and in the Lower Precinct.

This latest round of job cuts comes after 700 office jobs were slashed in June last year.

Boots is part of the US group Walgreens Boots Alliance. It has 2,510 stores in the UK.

Lloyds to shut 29 branches - but fate of Coventry banks unknown

Image

Lloyds Banking Group has announced plans to axe THOUSANDS of jobs under new proposals to cut costs.

The biggest retail banking group in the UK, Lloyds boasts numerous branches in Coventry and Warwickshire, though it remains to be seen whether these will be affected by the decision.

Lloyds will close 29 branches in total - featuring 19 of its own banks, as well as seven Bank of Scotland and three Halifax branches.

It is understood that all the affected branches will shut for good in June.

The bank employs about 77,000 people and has more than 2,000 branches, but has announced to workers it will be cutting 1,755 jobs.

They said they would add 170 new jobs in retail and commercial banking, as well as their legal team, in a bid to take the net figure for job losses down to about 1,585.

Lloyds have confirmed they hope the job losses can be achieved through voluntary means.

It always is. Yet the Hertford St Branch was almost always empty.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Two local branches of shoe retailer Brantano saved from closure by administrators

The Coventry and Warwick branches of Brantano have been saved from closure.

The Leicestershire shoe retailer went into administration in January, putting around 2,000 jobs at 198 stores at risk.

One hundred and forty of the branches have now been sold to a company controlled by Alteri Investors.

Among them are those at Central Six Retail Park in Coventry and Hatton Village in Warwick.

There are no other Brantano outlets in Coventry or Warwickshire.

Upmarket tailor Austin Reed goes into administration

Image

Austin Reed has collapsed into administration, putting almost 1,200 jobs at risk.

The 116-year-old tailoring brand, which once counted Winston Churchill and Elizabeth Taylor among its customers, appointed AlixPartners on Tuesday to explore options for the business after it ran out of cash.

It becomes the second high street retailer in two days to appoint administrators after BHS suffered the same fate on Monday, leaving 11,000 jobs hanging in the balance.

AlixPartners said the retailer would continue to trade while it explored possible options to secure a future for Austin Reed, including a sale of all or parts of the business.

Netto to shut down in UK as Sainsbury’s ends joint trial

Image

Budget supermarket chain Netto is to close down in the UK, putting 400 jobs at risk although Sainsbury’s said it will try to deploy as many of the 100 workers it put into the joint venture as it can.

Sainsbury’s said it will end its joint venture with Netto’s Danish owner Dansk after a two year trial and it aims to close the 16 stores in August.

Staff at the Wakefield-based supermarket chain will go through a consultation over the next two months.

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s denied the closure was anything to do with the shock Brexit vote and said the stores have been under review for some time.

Hundreds of Travis Perkins, Toolstation and Wickes staff face the axe

Image

Around 600 workers at Wickes, Toolstation and Travis Perkins face the axe.

Builders’ merchant Travis Perkins, which also owns Wickes and Toolsatation, has revealed it is planning to close more than 30 branches around the country.

The company has not revealed where the outlets earmarked for closure are but Travis Perkins has branches in Coventry, Nuneaton, Leamington and Rugby. In 2015 it opened a new regional distribution centre at Whitley Business Park.

There are Wickes stores in Coventry, Nuneaton, Rugby and Warwick and Toolstation outlets in Coventry, Nuneaton and Leamington.

The group said the branches would be shut across its trade businesses while it was also planning to close ten smaller distribution centres and reviewing its plumbing and heating division as it warned over full-year profits amid “uncertain” trading.

I can't say I'm surprised at this.

I was in at TP a few years back, they were screaming out for improvement, but they wouldn't listen. Oddly enough, it was the shop-floor that were most resistant, rather than the usual middle management.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
