Starbucks outlet closes at Coventry shopping park

Image

A popular branch of Starbucks has closed in Coventry.

The famous name in coffee has closed its outlet at Arena Shopping Park, which was based upstairs in the New Look store.

A notice in the window of New Look reads: "Thank you for your custom we will miss you".

It also advises customers that the nearest Starbucks stores are at Cross Point in Walsgrave, Binley Woods drive-thru, Tile Hill drive-thru or Broadgate in the city centre.

Steve Burr, area centre manager at Arena Shopping Park, said: "“We can confirm that Starbucks ceased trading at the shopping park on Sunday, September 6.

"We’re sorry to see them go, but customers can still get their coffee fix at a number of our other outlets including Greggs, Auntie Anne’s and Costa."

CoventryLive has contacted Starbucks for comment.

I think this has more to do with New Look closing than with Starbucks?

ASK Italian restaurant closes due to 'profound impact' of Covid-19 pandemic

Image

An ASK Italian restaurant in Warwick has closed permanently with the parent company expressing “deep sadness” at saying farewell to the town.

The restaurant has shut its doors due to the “profound impact” of the Covid-19 epidemic on the casual dining sector. A ‘to let’ sign has been placed on the fascia by Savills Estate Agents.

The Azzurri Group, which also owns Zizzi restaurants and Coco di Maria food-to-go outlets, announced in June that it would be closing 75 branches nationally, with the loss of more than 1,000 jobs.

The business was bought out of administration in June by investment management firm TowerBrook Capital Partners, saving around 225 sites.

But the branch in High Street is among those that will not be reopening following the temporary closure as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. A Zizzi restaurant in Kenilworth closed in August.

The chain said: “The Covid-19 crisis has had a profound impact on the casual dining sector, bringing many businesses like ours to a standstill.

"Despite being a successful operator, we have had to make some incredibly difficult decisions including the permanent closure of a number of sites.

“It is with deep sadness that we confirm Warwick to be amongst these closures and that we have had to say goodbye to a team of greatly valued employees and their much-loved customers.

“As things stand it was not viable to remain in our existing site but we do hope that one day we will return to the town.”

Poundland's Hertford Street store remains closed

Image

A Coventry Poundland store is “hibernating” as it sits out the reduced number of shoppers in the city centre due to the ongoing lockdown restrictions.

The shutters have been down for months, with the shop failing to join in a round of re-openings by the budget chain at the end of June.

The majority of Poundland stores remained open for business during lockdown, but around 100 were closed in March where there was another close by or where the shopping centre found it difficult to open.

Many have reopened since May, with the outlet in Hertford Street originally included on a list of those due to welcome back customers the following month.

Robust health and safety measures will operate in all the reopened Poundland stores as they have across all the outlets that have remained open, the retailer has said.

However, the Hertford Street store has remained shut.

A spokesman for Poundland said: “Our Coventry Hertford Street store is still hibernating because footfall has still not returned to levels that make it sensible to keep two stores open close-by.

"Our stores at Coventry Market Way, and the two retail parks remain open as usual.

“We're obviously still keeping an eye on that so we can get back to normal and reopen as quickly as possible.”

I doubt it'll reopen
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

It says a lot about a place when even a pound shop run with unpaid labour can't afford to open.

TSB announce plans to close 164 high street banks - with hundreds of jobs at risk

Image

TSB has announced plans to close around a third of their branches in a major blow to the high street.

The bank has today (September 30) revealed that 164 banks in total are at risk of closure.

It means that 848 employees are now set to enter into consultation regarding their futures.

According to TSB bosses, it comes as a result of a "significant shift in customer behaviour" with more people using online banking and a reduced footfall inside physical premises.

Though it is not yet known which branches are at risk, Coventry is home to two TSB branches.

There are further branches in Leamington Spa and Bedworth, in Warwickshire.

Meanwhile, the Unite union has hit out at the news, describing it as a "dark day" for colleagues.

Dominic Hook, Unite national officer said:“The decision by TSB to cut over 900 staff and close 164 branches makes this a dark day for the finance sector. Staff across TSB will be devastated by this news.

“Unite has urged the bank to rethink these plans and protect these much-needed jobs during the current health pandemic. Not only do these staff deserve more from their employer after showing the utmost loyalty to TSB, customers will be deeply hit by these branch closures.

“Unite has argued for some time that the financial services industry has a social responsibility not to walk away from its local customers who continue to need access to banking in bank branches. It beggars belief that just seven years ago TSB had 631 local branches and this announcement will reduce that number to merely 290 branches."

I think eventually all banks will close forcing people to on line banking to bring in the cashless society they want.

Here are the areas which will be affected.

I think instead of closing all the branches the banks could form alliances and share an office between 3 or 4 of them. At least that way the customers wouldn't be disadvantaged. - Of course, that relies on banks actually having the slightest consideration for those that support/use them.

Their atitude is 'people should use the post office instead' (assuming their local post office hasn't also been closed).
