The collision happened on the M6 northbound between junctions 3 and 3a at about 01:20 GMT.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said a car and a van had collided and the driver of the car had died at the scene.

The motorway was closed northbound between junction 2 and 3a with a diversion in place. But the stretch of road reopened at 11:00 GMT.

The spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a car and a van that had been in a serious collision.

Trapped in car

"The car had subsequently left the motorway and was on its roof and had suffered considerable damage.

"The man driving suffered multiple serious injuries and unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, nothing could be done to save him."

He added a woman passenger in the car had suffered multiple injuries and had been trapped for about 90 minutes until she was freed by the fire service.

She was taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire for further treatment.

A teenage boy, also travelling in the car, was out of the vehicle when crews arrived.

He was checked over at the scene and also transferred by ambulance to the same hospital for further assessment and treatment.

The driver of the van was checked over at the scene by ambulance crews but did not require further treatment.
