Warwick road ‘too dangerous’ for lollipop man...

A busy road too dangerous for a lollipop man or woman is still deemed safe enough for the school children who have to cross it twice a day.

Around 150 children have to cross the Stratford Road every morning and evening to get to Newburgh and Aylesford schools and Pathways Nursery, along with many parents and local residents who also make the journey.

There used to be a crossing patrol officer, but then the road was deemed too dangerous for them by Warwickshire County Council. The speed limit has since been reduced to 30mph, but residents say this is often ignored and the road is very busy.

Cllr Rebecca Clarke (Lab, Warwick West) is a parent of children at the school and said: “Crossing the Stratford Road is a daily struggle for many children and parents.

“Local people have been saying for years how dangerous the road is and you only need to stand on the corner of Shakespeare Avenue to see how risky it is for all pedestrians. The crossing and speed sensors are essential to keep our children safe on their way to school and to warn drivers that caution is required.”

Schools, parents, governors and councillors have teamed up to create a petition calling for a crossing point to be put in.

Cllr John Holland (Lab, Warwick West) added that it was “vital” the problem is resolved and urged people to sign the petition.

Headteacher of Newburgh Primary School Andrew Smith said: “The school would wholeheartedly support any school crossing that would make the journey to school safer for all children, parents and members of the community.

“The number of children crossing that road twice a day is 150, not including parents and local citizens, many of whom are elderly.

“With the increase in housing on Chase Meadow, moving of the Aylesford entrance further down the Stratford Road and increase in traffic we are looking to see the feasibility of some sort of crossing for the well being of the children.”

The county council declined to comment. To sign the petition go online: http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk
