Warwickshire batsman Varun Chopra has signed a contract extension, keeping him at Edgbaston until the end of the 2014 season.

The 24-year-old joined from Essex in 2009 and scored 1,203 first-class runs this summer, including three centuries.

Chopra told the club website: "I love playing at Edgbaston, so to add two years to my contract is fantastic.

"It was good to score more than 1,000 runs last season, but I want to be doing this consistently."

Chopra is set to head off to Sri Lanka over the winter with the England Potential Performance Programme (PEEP).

And Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles said he was pleased to have the opener's future secured before he departs.

"Varun's 1,200 runs in first-class cricket last season was instrumental to our push for the County Championship and his place on the PEEP was well deserved," said Giles.

"Securing a player of his calibre until at least the end of 2014 is a great boost to the squad as we look to build on last season."
