A call has been made for “greater openness” over plans to redevelop a major part of Nuneaton town centre.
Cabinet members on the Labour-controlled council have already had secret discussions about a potential facelift for Abbey Street, including proposals for the derelict former Coach and Horses pub and the Co-op car park.
But Coun Kris Wilson, deputy leader of the Tory opposition group, said: “This is a major decision not only for the town centre but the borough as a whole and needs, and deserves, scrutiny by members of the council in order to make sure that we get it right.
“There are important questions that we need answering surrounding the proposals.
"In the past other proposals have been deferred for greater member involvement and as an opposition we feel that this is no different.”
The Abbey Street redevelopment is currently listed as “a confidential pink paper item” which means it is not debated in public.
Coun Wilson added: “We understand that in this instance we are in the early stages so we don’t want to jeopardise the interests of the borough and the residents.
"But that shouldn’t stop us from scrutinising the decisions of the cabinet.’’
