Mr Ainsworth, who represents Coventry North East, says the issue of illegal sale of cars is “still there and it is as bad as it’s ever been”.

The Labour politician has written to Coventry City Council officials, local police and tax authorities calling for more action.

Council officials have launched a consultation to give members of the public the chance to give their views on the problem.

Mr Ainsworth says he has received fresh complaints from residents in his constituency about illegal roadside car sales in Sewall Highway, Wyken, and Athol Road, Walsgrave.

He said: “We have got to try and find a solution.

“The council has taken enforcement action along with the police in the past but the problem goes away and keeps coming straight back again.

“It’s worth pursuing the tax authorities too because the people running these businesses probably don’t have the same level of tax as legitimate ones.”

He added: “I know more about what’s going on in my constituency, but I’m told these illegal roadside car sales are popping up all over the city.
