Ricoh Arena rail plans submitted to government

Plans to build new railway stations and increase services between Coventry and Nuneaton have been submitted to the government.

Warwickshire County Council has approved the £19.2m proposals which would see a station being built at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry City's ground.

Trains could run every 15 minutes on match days, the council said.

Final approval is being sought from the Department for Transport and a decision is likely later this year.

The council said a longer platform would be built at Bedworth and a new railway station created at Bermuda Park.

'Great things'

Two-carriage trains could run between Nuneaton and Coventry every 30 minutes, as part of the plans.

The Department for Transport is holding a public consultation between 9 September and 14 October for anyone who wishes to submit a relevant comment on the proposals.

Councillor Linda Bigham, cabinet member for city development, said: "If these proposals are given the go-ahead great things could come for the immediate area, as well as wider Coventry and our neighbours in Warwickshire.

"I would encourage everyone to make their positive comments count so that the government hears the opinion of the people of Coventry.

"After all, we who live in Coventry are the ones in the best position to know what benefits this would bring to our city and the surrounding area."
