Nuneaton’s George Eliot hospital has agreed to pay a magician £15,000 in compensation for missing a serious hand injury that affected his career.

40-year old Kyle Summers – who performs magic shows across the country and is part of the Magic Circle – went to George Eliot last January after a cup smashed in his left hand.

Doctors checked him over and he was soon discharged.

He went back a few weeks later as his hand was really stiff and it was affecting his ability to shuffle his cards.

They re-examined it and diagnosed a severed tendon – which needed two operations.

Kyle’s arm was put in a sling before he had intense physiotherapy which made it awkward to do tricks.

He took legal action because of the impact the problem had on his career and he accepted £15,000 in an out of court settlement with George Eliot Hospital.

Kyle said: “Suffering even the slightest hand impairment is an absolute nightmare for any magician. In my case, it happened at a critical time in my career, although I had been able to continue working albeit with a fair bit of discomfort…I am now returned to full flexibility and audience feedback suggests the injury isn’t obvious.

“I would hate anyone else to find themselves in my position simply because a medic missed and failed to deal with something as relatively straightforward as a severed tendon.”

George Eliot hospital told Mercia they would not be releasing a statement about what happened as they do not comment on individual cases.
