Eric Sayce, 77, was rescued by a passing lorry driver who realised he was stuck and pulled him out.

Eric, of Styvechale, Coventry stumbled and fell thigh high into the trench while out walking his guide dog Emma in the Green Lane area on Monday.

Hapless Eric joked that he felt as if he was ‘‘falling to Australia’’.

The 4ft deep hole had been dug by workmen – but a protective cover had been removed.

Emma stopped at the edge of the hole, but Eric, of Styvechale, lost his footing and fell in.

He said: “I regularly go for a walk in the morning and after the hole was dug a board was put over it.

“When Emma stopped I thought we must have reached the board and wondered why she hadn’t carried on so I just put my foot out. But there was nothing there and I fell in.

“It was very scary. I felt as though I was falling down to Australia and I put my hand out to stop me.”
