Library staff in Warwickshire have been told the council is looking to make 50 full-time posts redundant.
That could result in up to 120 of them losing their jobs as many people work part-time.
The county council is currently looking to close 16 libraries as it tries to cut £2m from the libraries budget over the next three years.
Staff have been asked to express a preference for either reducing hours, or taking voluntary redundancy.
A spokeswoman for the council stressed they were looking to avoid compulsory redundancies.
The county council has said that some libraries could also have their opening hours cut.
The redundancy figures are one of the recommendations after a 12-week consultation by the county council into the future of local library services.
Part of the consultation was the possibility of local communities taking over the libraries that are to close. The deadline for interested groups has now been extended until October.
