Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation – who own MG Rover at Longbridge – have been working on a few project with the university and have decided to step up their relationship.

The collaboration makes Coventry University the primary academic partner of SAIC in the UK and will see them working together on a range of advanced engineering research and development projects.

In particular, they will look at new technology and professional training for their workers.

The news comes days after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited the region and spoke of ‘brighter prospects’ in the relationship between China and the West Midlands.

Professor of business at the University, David Bailey, says the announcement proves that Coventry is a global power in the car industry:

“Warwick – great links with companies like Tata and Jaguar Land Rover, Coventry – strong on automotive engineering and design and this link with Shanghai. We’ve got links now with both India and China, the two great emerging automotive powers so it is great for Coventry.

“China is already the biggest car market in the world, they are the biggest producer. Their companies have tended to focus on their home market but they are looking to expand and for Coventry to have a link with a company with global aspirations and a brand like MG, there’s tremendous opportunities there.”
