The accident happened in Holyhead Road, between the junctions of Southbank Road and Sherbourne Crescent, at about 7.50am.

It closed part of the busy road Holyhead Road for about seven hours.

The girl suffered serious head and leg injuries.

The accident involved a Peugeot 308. Its female driver was uninjured and stopped the car at the scene.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to come forward.

Witnesses say the teenager lived locally and was on her way to school when the incident happened.

Ambulance crews arrived and mobilised the casualty with a spinal board and neck collar.

She was then taken to the University Hospital, Walsgrave, before being transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The crash scene was cordoned off by police for a forensic examination of the site to take place.

A witness, who wished to be anonymous, said: “The girl was on her way to school and she was wearing her school uniform. She didn’t live far away from here and it’s all come as such a shock.”

The incident sparked traffic chaos during the morning rush-hour as a diversion was put in place.

The diversion affected a mile-long stretch of the Holyhead Road between Moseley Avenue, opposite the Holyhead pub, and Southbank Road. It remained in operation until about 2.30pm.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene after the service was called out to a collision involving a “serious injury”.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said the 14-year-old suffered serious, but not life-threatening, head and leg injuries.

Anyone with information should call the West Midlands Police collision investigation unit on 0121 322 6098.
