Coventry grandad sets up pub in back garden

A grandad was so upset when his favourite local boozer shut he decided to build one himself – in his own back yard.

Frank Fox was worried he was going to lose the simple pleasure of going for a pint when The Whitmore, in Sadler Road, was demolished to make way for a nursing home two years ago.

So Frank – who used to work as a barman and welder – came up with the wacky idea of building his own pub in the back garden of his home in Middlemarch Road, Radford.

The 63-year-old knocked down his shed and spent a year perfecting his own personal refuge, spending £5,000 on the 20-seat boozer.

Boasting a flat screen television, neon lights, and authentic beer pump handles, the pub has already been host to a stag and hen do, wedding reception and funeral.

Frank has even named it after himself, The Snooty Fox.

It features the original Mitchells & Butlers square tapering lantern from Coventry City’s old Highfield Road ground, a surround sound system and a loo.

Furniture includes the original tables, chairs and bar stand of The Whitmore which he was allowed to take just before it was demolished.

Although it’s not open to the general public, Frank has ‘opening’ hours from 8pm on a Friday and Saturday for his closest friends and family.

He buys his beer and spirits from a local supplier and his ‘punters’ make a donation, with any profit made going to the charity Help for Heroes.

He said: "When The Whitmore closed down I was gutted – I had nowhere else to go. I told a few friends of mine I was going to build my own.

"I bought all the wood and managed to get the furniture out the pub before it was demolished, like the tables, chairs and signs.
