Officers were called to a house in Avon Street, Stoke, in the early hours of Monday after a member of the public reported hearing glass being smashed nearby.

When officers arrived at the house, which is understood to be split into two flats, they could smell cannabis through the broken window.

It’s believed the window was smashed when a brick was thrown through it.

After looking inside the house, officers discovered a cannabis factory had been set-up.

Police were unable to access the property to conduct a thorough search immediately because of fears the electricity supply may have been tampered with, which is often the case with cannabis factories of this type.

Police officers and community support officers stood guard at the property throughout Monday and yesterday to secure the scene until the searches could take place.

The police presence in the residential street raised eyebrows among local residents who contacted the Telegraph in a bid to discover what had been happening at the end of their road.

One woman, who asked not to be named, said: “There has been a very large police presence since Monday morning, but we don’t know what’s happening.

"We’ve just been told there’s nothing to worry about. They (police) broke into the house through the front door, it is quite worrying.”

Last night police were expected to search the city property to establish the full extent of the cannabis factory inside.

No arrests have been made.
