Holyhead Road in the middle of Coventry is set to benefit from a £1.5 million pound revamp.
The cash will pay for things like traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and resurfacing to fill in holes in the road.
The work should be completed by Christmas and will happen at the same time every streetlight along the route is changed to make it brighter for drivers using it at night.
Councillor Lindsley Harvard, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “I am delighted that this work is about to start. It really is a complete package of improvements – and together they will help us to improve safety, journey times and the overall appearance of this very well used route into the city centre. This is particularly important as we get ready to welcome the world in 2012.
“Our own road team will do much of this work. We will try our best to keep disruption to a minimum and any diversions will be clearly signed, although there will, of course, be some short-term disruption I hope people will bear with us.”
