The tiny pets were put in two shoe boxes – three in one and two in the other – and left at the door of the Broad Lane Veterinary Centre’s Radford branch.

They were discovered on the doorstep of the Radford Road practice at 8.45am on Thursday, by a veterinary nurse who works at the centre.

The six-week-old kittens - three girls and two boys - are now in the care of the Coventry Cats Protection group and are ready to be rehomed.

Elly Pittaway, senior vet, said: “One of our nurses came in at 8.45am to find two shoe boxes wrapped in plastic bags on the doorstep and opened the boxes to see five jet-black kittens looking back at her.

"I gave them a quick check-up and they seemed well looked after. It’s just a shame they were left in that way as kittens aren’t usually difficult to rehome.”

Anyone interested in rehoming one or more of the kittens should call Coventry Cats Protection on 024 7625 1491.
