Plans for a new leisure and shopping complex have been unveiled by developers.

Resorts World would be built at the NEC and incorporate a casino, hotel, restaurants, cinema and a designer outlet shop.

Genting Casinos are behind the plans, and aim to start work later in the year, ready for it to open in 2014. The company are behind a much larger-scale Resorts World in Sentosa, Singapore, which is costing £2.2bn and will include a Universal Studios theme park.

The development here will be much smaller, costing a minimum of £90m. It is expected to create 1,100 permanent jobs, and a further 1,700 in construction as the complex is built. Speaking earlier this year, NEC Group Chief Executive Paul Thandi said:

“Together with [the developers] we intend to make this groundbreaking £90million leisure complex one of the biggest and best in the UK.

The state-of-the-art resort will support our vision for Destination NEC offering a work, rest and play environment for all of our customers, and allowing us to compete with venues across the world offering a genuine destination experience.”
