The figure of about 402,000 last year compared to about 380,000 in 2009.

A refurbishment costing nearly £7m was unveiled in 2006 following a £7.5m makeover two years earlier.

Temporary exhibitions in the past 12 months have included the 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Coventry Blitz in November and Transport for Disabled People.

Gary Hall, chief executive, said: "Since I joined the museum in 2007, it has been a major objective to drive our visitor figures through the 400,000 barrier."
