For more than 20 years Peggy Crawford ensured generations of Keresley children got to and from school safely.

In fact she was such a familiar sight in Bennetts Road South she became known affectionately as “The Bell Lollipop Lady” after the nearby pub.

But the great-grandmother sadly passed away at her home in Benson Road after a brave two-year battle with cancer.

She leaves husband John, 73, children Angela and Stephen, grandchildren Dean, Daniel and Alex, and great-grandchildren Lewis and Callum.

Peggy and John only recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

John said: “Peggy was jolly, kind and caring, and she absolutely loved children. Even when she was suffering she still went out with the lollipop.

“I thought a hell of a lot of her.

“After 50 years of marriage we must have had something special.”

Peggy was born in Aylesbury and grew up in Northumberland and was working in a tailoring factory when she first dated soldier John in 1956.

They parted when he was sent to serve in Germany for three years, but rekindled the romance when he returned to Britain in 1959.

They married the following year and had children Angela in 1961 and Stephen in 1964.
