In the UK, Land Rover sales were at a 63-year high.

The company also enjoyed record-breaking sales in March in places like China and India, with increases in other countries including Russia and Brazil.

Globally the JLR brand saw a 22 per cent rise in sales in the first quarter of 2011, 14 per cent ahead of the figure for the same period in 2010.

Jaguar Land Rover have already recruited 1,500 new workers for its factory at Halewood on Merseyside, and is now looking to find 1,000 extra engineers to help the research and development arm of the business at Whitley in Coventry and Gaydon in Warwickshire over the next 2 years.

JLR Group Sales Operations Director Phil Popham, said: “We want to expand in terms of the markets where we’re selling and the number of products we produce – we want to be a true global player and we’re well down the path to achieving that goal.”

The creation of jobs here comes just months after JLR confirmed that it was creating a plant in China which would produce more than 5,000 vehicles a year.
