Ryan Kieran, 23, and Richard Quirk, 21, were sentenced at Coventry Magistrates Court yesterday after goading their dogs to attack the six-month-old cat called Daisy.

The court heard the kitten was “effectively disembowelled” in Mary Slessor Street, Willenhall, after Kieran climbed a tree and threw the frightened pet 15ft into the jaws of the frenzied dogs.

Kieran, of Charter House Avenue, Canley, was jailed for six months and Quirk, of Outermarch Road, Radford, was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison. They will both serve half their sentences in prison and the rest on licence.

Both were banned from keeping animals for 15 years.

Passing sentence, District Judge Ian Gillespie said: “This is a sickening attack.

“It doesn’t take much common sense to understand the pain and terror felt by that cat as it was torn apart by these dogs. Your behaviour was cruel in the extreme. The cat was effectively disembowelled.”

The court heard how the bloodthirsty pair kicked the hind legs of their American pitbulls and attempted to throw them up the tree to attack the “much-loved pet”.

Of the two animals, only Kieran’s three-year-old pitbull – named Chewy – was retrieved by police. The district judge ordered the dog be destroyed.

The pair were prosecuted after a nearby resident, who knew the two men, witnessed the attack and gave evidence against them.
