The man driving the small car died shortly after the 9am collision near the Elephant and Castle pub in Alderman’s Green Road, Alderman’s Green.

A Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance was turned away when paramedics at the scene called to say nothing could be done for him.

An elderly passenger in the car suffered a dislocated shoulder in the two-vehicle smash and was taken by land ambulance to Nuneaton’s George Eliot Hospital.

The van driver suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival ambulance crews found a badly damaged small silver car that had been in collision with a white van.

“Unfortunately it was immediately obvious that there was nothing that could be done to save the driver of the car.

“He was confirmed dead at the scene.”
