‘Two for one’ deals have become popular since the recession convinced people to tighten their belts.

And now it seems NHS chiefs at Coventry’s University Hospital are getting in on the act too.

Mum and daughter even had their gallbladders whipped out by the same surgeon – who performed their operations back-to-back – and then woke up in hospital beds side by side.

Sandra, aged 50, said: “When I woke up the first thing I asked the nurse was 'How is Leanne'?

“She smiled at me and said, Let’s find out. Then she pulled back the curtain and Leanne was there lying in the next bed. It was incredible.”

Both Sandra and Leanne suffered with agonising gallstones for months before their operations.

Grandmother Sandra was in so much pain she could only eat soup and lost three stone before her operation. She was even rushed into hospital for five days before Christmas with jaundice and stomach cramps as strong as labour pains.

But by a remarkable coincidence both Sandra and Leanne were eventually booked in for surgery on the same day. They were even notified by telephone just hours apart.
