Extra train services will be added to the timetable for Nuneaton when the Virgin monopoly ends next year.

London Midland, the other main carrier travelling through Trent Valley station, have announced additional services, starting as soon as the restrictions are removed on March 31.

The weekday 6.30am to Rugby and the 8.02pm to Northampton will both continue to London, while there will be a new 9.12pm to Northampton.

On the northbound route, there will be three new services – at 4.46pm, 5.24pm and 8.13pm – leaving Euston and calling at Nuneaton.

Mark Whiteleg, of the local rail Users Group, said: “This is good news for passengers and plugs the large gap in services northbound from Nuneaton in the evening. It also means people can come back in the evening peak period and beyond by London Midland rather than Virgin and get down to London by London Midland earlier in the morning.

“It also looks as though there will be extra services on Sundays but not Saturdays, which is disappointing. These new services have been agreed in principle subject to the detailed timetabling being agreed but it does not mean we will stop campaigning for a return of an all day fast service to and from London and the North West.”
