Coventry Council is launching an online jobs fair to find new work for staff whose positions are being shelved because of cutbacks.

We had confirmation last month that around 1,000 posts will have to go between now and 2014 to help make tens of millions of pound of savings.

200 of those will go this year.

So far around 500 people have applied to take voluntary redundancy, with 300 having requests accepted.

Since November, the council has been working with people like Job Centre Plus to offer workers who’s positions are being removed to help with writing CVs, career counselling and help with things like interview skills.

Councillor Phil Townshend, Cabinet Member for Corporate and Neighbourhood Services says it’s just one of the things they are doing to help people: “This has been followed up with the launch of the new Portal for re-deployees where they can access the portal to view and apply for all redeployment opportunities within the Council.

“A new micro web-site is also being developed for re-deployees to access with a range of useful information on how to make the best of themselves when applying for jobs and being interviewed.

“I feel that it is really important that in these times where we sadly have to make these necessary cuts, we still show we value our employees by doing all we can to support them and help them find alternative employment.”
