A little understood fact about U-boats is that they could only ever spend a few hours underwater. In the early stages of the war this wasn't much of a disadvantage as they could outrun most escort vessels on the surface and being able to use their deck-mounted gun saved precious torpedoes. By 1943 however spending even a short period on the surface became invariably fatal due to improvements in allied radar technology.
