A dog lover says he has been left devastated after his “best mate” – a distinctive Chinese Shar-Pei – was stolen from outside a supermarket by a man who lured him away with fried chicken scraps.
John McColm popped into Tesco Express in Walsgrave Road, Coventry for five minutes last Wednesday but when he returned, eight-year-old Leo had vanished.
It’s understood the Chinese Shar-Pei – a breed known for its wrinkly appearance – was tempted away at around 7.15pm by a man with a fried chicken take-away.
The suspect, who witnesses say had been seen drinking earlier in the Old Ball pub, is described as being in his late 40s, having a stocky build, with receding hair line and a bald patch at the back of his head.
It’s believed he spoke with a slight Irish accent.
Dog owner John, who lives in Stoke, said the theft has left him heartbroken.
He said: “Anyone who owns a treasured pet will understand the hole that’s left when they’re no longer around.
“He’s my best mate and the place just isn’t the same with him not around.
“He’s a very placid, good-natured dog.
