Customers and traders in a busy Coventry street are furious after a car park was shut without warning.

Drivers using Far Gosford Street say they have had no choice but to park illegally after parking bays were also blocked off.

Construction workers closed the public car park last week to carry out repairs and also put cones along bays on one side of the street as part of work to develop the area.

Furious Fred Lewis, who has used the shops, pubs and barbers in the street for 25 years, was given a parking ticket for leaving his car in a loading bay as no other spaces were available.

Mr Lewis, 65, of Coundon, said: “I accept I was parked illegally and I will pay my fine, but when the car park is closed and parking bays are closed off, where else are us customers supposed to park?

“I have asked the council why the car park is closed and why the cones are there, and I don’t get an answer.

“Surely traffic wardens can give us a bit of leeway until the car park is opened again?”
