Two of Bedworth’s main car parks are now officially closed to make way for a massive revamp of the town centre.

The George Street multi-storey and spaces on Mill Street are off-limits to allow major redevelopment work on the Tesco store there to begin.

Around 150 new jobs will be created when it re-opens as an Extra, with nearly 400 additional parking spaces built by the end of the year.

The 340 people already employed there will be retained, and a number of smaller retail units will also be opened as part of the redevelopment.

Julie Jackson, the Councillor responsible for regeneration, said: “It is inevitable that there will be some disruption in the town whilst the new Tesco store is being built, but Bedworth is still open for business and there are plenty of parking spaces available across the town.”

“The Council is working closely with Tesco to minimise the disruption to the town’s visitors. One scheme that has been made available is the free shuttle bus service that will take shoppers to the Arena Park Tesco store from Bedworth Town Centre.”

“I am sure inconvenience that we will all be suffering will be well worth it when one of the biggest Tesco developments in the region is opened towards the end of this year.”

There’ll also be town centre improvements – with new ramps and stairs installed around the Aldi supermarket to improve access and new benches and plants put in on the high street.
