The number of under 18s falling pregnant in Coventry has dropped for the first time in three years.
335 conceived in 2009, down 3 per cent on the number the year before.
The figures had been steadily rising every since 2006.
In Warwickshire, the figures has decreased for the second-year running, to 355 in 2009.
Across our region over half of the pregnancies result in an abortion.
Penny Barber from local sexual health charity Brook Advisory says although the stats are encouraging, a lot more work needs to be done to tackle the issue:
“There are still an awful lot of young people getting pregnant who don’t want to be – around half of the teenage conceptions do result in abortion.”
“That’s an awful lot of young people that either don’t have the knowledge they need or don’t have the skills they need to use that knowledge or simply can’t get access to the right contraception for them.”
