A woman working for Coventry City Council’s accusing her bosses of abandoning homeless people to cut costs. In an exclusive interview with Mercia, the woman – who we can’t name to protect her identity – said officials were to get rid of staff in her housing department to help save £39 million this year.
She said: “People we deal with are vulnerable, some of them are fleeing violence and domestic violence.”
“If you haven’t got an advocate – someone to investigate your case – then there’s the chance people will start slipping through the net.”
“(These cuts) actually target people who’re vulnerable, who haven’t got money behind them or anyone to fight for them.”
“When we go and talk to people on the streets, they tell us this is disproportionate and unfair.”
In response, a council spokesperson said: “The Housing Service is currently subject to a fundamental service review.”
“It is too early to predict what the outcome will be.”
“However, the council is committed to providing the most efficient and effective service possible to homeless people and we will be aiming to make sure that the review results in a more customer-focused service.”
