Business leaders defend Leamington shopping development plan

Business leaders have defended a controversial shopping development in Leamington – which was previously labelled potentially “disastrous” for the town.

A number of businesses have leapt to the defence of the planned Clarendon Avenue development, claiming it will help the town move back up the national retail ladder.

The Leamington Society slammed the proposed scheme, on the site of the current Chandos Street car park, saying it could draw shoppers away from other parts of the town and lead to more unoccupied shops. They fear the shopping complex could leave gaping holes if existing stores relocate.

The proposed scheme would create 200,000 sq ft of new retail space in a two-level arcade. It will also include cafes and more than 400 car parking spaces.

But developers say they are confident the main attraction will be an anchor store which will reach a “positive conclusion” this year.

Will Robinson, of developers Wilson Bowden, said the choice of an anchor tenant was vital for the success of every major scheme.

He added: “They set the tone for a whole development and we believe we are talking to a perfect retail chain for Clarendon Arcade and for Leamington as a whole. Retailers need new space because otherwise their businesses will not grow.
