Environmental health officers were called into the Express Diner in Gosford Street, in July of last year after receiving a complaint from a customer.

When officers looked inside the tandoori oven in which the naan bread was cooked, they found it was in a poor state of repair and a large section was damaged and missing.

Coventry City Council agreed to prosecute and the case came before city magistrates last week.

The owner, Razzak Hanif, pleaded guilty to the offence of failing to place food on the market which is safe. He was fined £100 and was ordered to pay costs of £843.

Coun Phil Townshend, cabinet member for corporate and neighbourhood services, said: "Food hygiene is paramount, and customers have the right to expect the highest standards.

"All premises that prepare for consumption are duty bound to abide by the law, and to serve food that is fit to eat."
