Plans to build Coventry’s largest Tesco superstore is gathering pace despite ongoing fury from nearby residents.
Bosses at Tesco want to replace their existing store with a Tesco Extra, in Cannon Park Shopping Centre.
The scheme will also include 35 other shops, 60 apartments, a new petrol station and car park.
They intend to buy freehold for the site, which is already leased out to them by the city council.
The 100,000 sq ft of retail space would make it larger than the one next door to the Ricoh Arena.
Tesco hope to attract customers in south Coventry, but towns and villages in south Warwickshire.
A decision will be made at a cabinet meeting on February 8, which could result in an extra £500,000 for the council.
But residents have been furious about the proposals after the council planning committee narrowly voted in favour of a larger superstore in January, 2009.
Only six out of 12 councillors turned up to the committee meeting, of which just three voted for the plan to go ahead.
Two councillors abstained from voting and one opposed.
They feel it will cause hazardous walkways, cause more traffic at peak times, and become an eyesore.
