Firefighters in Coventry rescued a variety of trapped animals including cats, dogs, squirrels and even a gecko in the last year.

Crews went out a total of 31 times to rescue careless creatures and saved every single one.

Among the menagerie of animals rescued were 11 cats, nine dogs and six pigeons.

And rather predictably seven of the cats had got stuck high up – including one that was trapped 30ft up a tree for six days.

But it wasn’t just cats that tested firefighters with other creatures also getting stuck in bizarre places.

In September a puppy got his head stuck in a wine rack, August saw a gecko get stuck under floorboards and on April Fool’s Day another dog got trapped between two fences.

The vast majority of call outs were instigated by the RSPCA.

Judith Haw, from the charity, said: “Quite a lot of our rescues involve the fire service because they are the ones with the expertise, the experience and importantly the equipment.

“Things like cats up trees, or birds trapped in frozen lakes are often too dangerous for us to tackle on our own.

“If it wasn’t for the fire service and their help we wouldn’t be able to do many of the rescues we do.

“And as well as helping us I’m sure going out on such a diverse number of call outs helps them ensure they are fully trained and have the opportunity to use all of their equipment.
