An event to sign up more people as bone marrow donors has been set up by a councillor who could have just two years to live.

Former Nuneaton mayor Tom Wilson has been diagnosed with leukaemia and needs a stem cell transplant to save his life.

He and his wife are holding an event with stem cell register charity Anthony Nolan to get more donors to sign up.

The recruitment drive takes place at the Nuneaton Bowls Club on Thursday.

Councillor Wilson, who represents the St Nicholas ward as an Independent, said finding a matching donor and having a transplant would drastically improve his quality of life.

"I'd be able to continue my life until its natural end," he said.

Rebecca Sedgwick, from Anthony Nolan, said the need for donors was urgent.

"We can only find matches for around half of those who need one," she said.

The recruitment drive takes place from 1500 GMT to 1900 GMT.
