An artist from Coventry has transformed parts of a care home into a beach and a park – using Dulux tester pots.

Roy Meats, 52, of Exhall Green, was asked to create a series of murals at St Joseph’s Residential Care Home, in Coleshill, earlier this year.

Now his work in the care home’s Jade wing is complete so residents can now watch the donkeys on the beach or take a stroll in the park, all from the comfort of their own home.

“It’s created a big talking point,” said care home manager Pam Booton. “Not only are residents in this wing talking about it but our other residents are all very impressed.

“Their families have been coming in and admiring Roy’s work. I’m sure one or two photos have been taken too.”

It is hoped the 14 dementia patients who live in the part of the home decorated by Roy will benefit from the new murals.

Graeme Riley, head of care for the Father Hudson’s Society, which runs the home, said: “It’s about tapping into something a resident may remember from their earlier days.

“Dementia affects short-term memory so if you can represent something from a resident’s past then you can really take them on a trip down memory lane.”

As well as the beach, Coventry’s king of the tester pots also painted window scenes harking back to the 40s, 50s and 60s. One resident’s childhood cat was even added to one.
