The London 2012 Paralympic Games hopeful fell just short of his personal best in a time of two hours 18 minutes and 57 seconds.

"I'm slightly disappointed I didn't get a PB, but I'm pleased with the win definitely," Smith told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.

"Conditions were pretty perfect, I can't complain at all," he added.

"I was close to my personal best so maybe I will come back next time, when we have more races this year," said Smith, who won last year's London marathon in his class.

The current British 5,000m and 10,000m record holder, who joined 14,000 other athletes in Dubai, said he needs more funding ahead of the 2012 games.

"I need to get some more money together. I still need a new wheelchair, to upgrade this one to something a bit more modern, a bit faster and then maybe we'll see if we can get those personal bests.

"It will make quite a considerable difference. I've been training hard for a good few years and I've really started pushing it in the last six months so I really need to just get the chair to make that bit of difference to get out there with the top guys.

"My target for 2011 is to break at least three more British records and to defend my titles at both the London and Berlin Marathons," said Smith, whose marathon best is 2:18 in the T52 Class in Berlin in 2009.
