Scores of commercial vans were pulled over by police in Coventry yesterday as part of nationwide crackdown on road safety.

West Midlands Police officers, as well as officers from Warwickshire Police and the Central Motorway Police Group and VOSA, checked over vehicles travelling past the city’s Ricoh Arena on the A444.

Vans were guided into the Ricoh Arena’s car parks where they were checked over by experts.

Sergeant Mick Dodd was leading yesterday’s operation.

He said: “We have been looking to make sure the drivers have the right licence, they are insured and their vehicles are roadworthy. If we find any defects we can prosecute or issue prohibition notices depending on the severity of the defects.”

The action comes as part of Operation Mermaid, with similar roadside checks taking place across the country.
