Greek family who have taken over Coventry chip shop say food will be 'just as good'

A Greek family who have taken over a much-loved Coventry chip shop have promised that the food will be 'just as good.' Couple Ross and Lulu Argyrou will be running Aldermans Green Fish Bar.

Customers were saddened when Fotoulla and Zacharias Georgiou announced the chippy would be closing just before Christmas 2024. Both had helmed the city business for many years, but left because the rent was being increased.

Landlords Ross, 62, and Lulu, 58, had been living in Cyprus, Greece, but recently returned to Coventry to take over the venture. It was fully refurbished and opened to delighted locals today (June 23).

Lulu said they have owned Aldermans Green Fish Bar for 16 years and decided to take over because they missed England. She, her husband, and son Lambros will be handling the day-to-day running of the business, which will open from 11.30am to 2pm and 4.30pm to 9pm Monday to Thursday, staying open until 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday.

Speaking to CoventryLive, Lulu said: “Our food will be just as good. I was raised in George and Helens Fish and Chip Shop in Harborne. We had one in Shirley, Solihull, the Cranmore Fish Bar, so it is in the blood.”

Ross and Lulu said they have completely revamped the premises, with new flooring, tiling, signage, and fridges. Everything will be freshly cooked, and a number of new menu items have also been introduced.

Lulu said: “We are looking forward to meeting the people and welcoming them! We are going to be here with a smile, greeting customers, and hopefully they will accept us. Please come in and try us, you will not be disappointed.”

I wish them luck, they'll certainly need it!

Shop once home to popular chippy applies for alcohol licence

Image

A shop once home to a popular chippy on the outskirts of Coventry city centre has applied for and off the premises alcohol licence. In recent years, the address on Lower Ford Street has been a series of fast food businesses, mainly selling chicken and pizza.

But for years before that it was Tony's Fish bar - a much-loved chippy often frequented by people vacating nearby pubs. But it looks set to enjoy a new lease of life, after Coventry City Council received an application for an alcohol licence.

The application has been submitted with the establishment name listed as Malar Express. It has requested permission to sell alcohol to be consumed off the premises between the hours of 6am to 11am seven days a week.

The application states the business will run the standard Challenge 25 policy and will take measures to ensure their sales do not lead to antisocial behaviour.

It reads: "We won't sell any alcohol to people who seem to be already intoxicated under the influence of alcohol. We have signs that we will display for challenge 25 and prohibition of sale of age restricted products to minors. signs will be placed for fire exits. first aid kits will be available and installed. Fire alarms system is already installed.

"No gatherings or drinking or drunken behaviour or noisy behaviour and any kind of anti-social behaviour/ activity will be allowed outside the premises and signs will be placed in appropriate places to inform members of the public.

"Separate fridges for soft drinks and daily consumable products and a separate fridge for soft drinks and food."

The shop is located on a row of businesses that includes hairdressers, an internet café, a Caribbean takeaway and an off licence.
