Coventry council forced to pay compensation for missed bin collections

Three Coventry residents received hundreds of pounds in compensation from Coventry City Council last year as a result of repeated missed bin collections.

The cases feature in the latest annual review of complaints against the authority in 2020-2021, listed by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman.

Thirteen complaints led to detailed investigations and 10 were upheld (77 per cent).

Three of the upheld complaints related to missed bin collections, two of which were concerns made by disabled residents over a lack of assisted bin collections.

One complainant reported 16 missed assisted bin collections over a period of 16 months with the council having to pay her £400 in compensation.

A further complaint over assisted waste collections led to £200 compensation and the council introducing new software to flag up missed collections.

Another complaint said she suffered from “repeated” missed household and recycling collections “dating back several years”, leading to £100 compensation.
