Motor organisation says blanket 20mph speed limit will make Coventry less safe
The Alliance of British Drivers (ABD) has hit out at plans to convert Coventry into a ‘20mph city’ suggesting the implementation of a blanket low speed limits actually made roads more dangerous.
Labour councillors have been pushing for the lower speed limit since 2014 and it will eventually cover almost every residential road but not main routes or A roads. Each 20mph zone created in the city will cost an estimated £10,000.
But Brian Gregory, from the ABD, said there was mounting evidence that blanket 20mph schemes were not only ineffective but dangerous and accused those of driving them forward as jumping on a political bandwagon.
He said: “The mindset of these people is ‘don’t confuse me with the facts’. It has become an act of faith that lowering road speeds must be safer.”
Mr Gregory said: “They don’t reduce speeds. They stop drivers concentrating on what is going on around them and make them focus on their speedometers.
“It’s a perfect storm as far as we are concerned. Accident prevention is about perception and hazard response.
“If you lack perception, because you are looking at your speedometer instead of the road, it is going to make things worse.
“20mph zones make things worse. They give the perception they’re safer and people act less responsibly in those areas. Generally, in a 30mph zone, most people are travelling responsibly.”
“This is about trying to force people out of their cars and onto public transport.”
Labour Coun Jayne Innes, cabinet member for public services, is leading the drive to make Coventry a 20mph city.
She told the Telegraph that 20mph zones already introduced in the city centre and Hillfields had been effective in reducing incidents. The Telegraph has requested this data on two separate occasions but has not been forwarded the figures.
Speaking about the claims from ABD that 20mph zones actually made roads more dangerous, she said: “I think that’s just silly.
“We’re not looking at changing speed limits across main arteries we’re looking at areas like where parents are dropping kids off and encouraging people to drive more sensibly.
“Why a motoring organisation would make that claim, I don’t know. That doesn’t fit with my experience or with my role as a councillor.
“You need to ask if they are being as responsible as they ought to be.”
