Man who helped killers dispose of car jailed

A man who helped dispose of a car used in the murder of Coventry mum Hayley Pointon has been jailed for four years.

Dylan Whitty, aged 30, helped killers Aaron Newman and Aaron Power get rid of a stolen VW Golf that they had used to drive to Hinckley in February 2013 in a botched attempt to execute Miss Pointon’s on off boyfriend Nigel Barwell in Hinckley.

The pair, who are both now serving 31-year prison sentences, killed Miss Pointon, aged 30, instead.

Whitty, from Coventry, had denied a charge of assisting an offender but jurors found him guilty.

Today at Leicester Crown Court he was sentenced to four years in prison.

Whitty gave evidence during his trial, telling jurors he was on a “mission to tell the truth”.

He claimed that had he known he was being asked to move a car that was involved in a murder he wouldn’t have travelled to Hinckley.

He was part of a group that tried to collect the vehicle, parked a few hundred metres away from where Hayley was killed, the day after the murder.

When the group arrived they realised they didn’t have the keys or the vehicle’s logbook and they were forced to return.
