A Coventry care home has been rated 'inadequate’ and placed in special measures after inspectors found staff shortages and management issues.

Keresley Wood Care Centre failed to meet the Care Quality Commission (CQC) minimum standard of ‘good’ for the sixth inspection running.

A report concluded that the home, which provides nursing and personal care for up to 47 older people, was not safe or well-led and was not always caring, effective, or responsive.

Since the inspection, a new management company, Healthcare Management Solutions, has taken over at the home on the Tamworth Road in Keresley.

Inspectors who turned up unannounced at the home found that: “Without exception people and relatives said there were not enough staff.”

One resident who was being cared for in bed was feeling unwell and continually called out for staff – but a worker who did arrive could only spend a limited amount of the time trying to offer reassurance and comfort to the person. Another person who was reliant on two members of staff to move safely waited over 20 minutes for assistance with personal care because only one worker was available.

An over-reliance on agency staff was another conclusion drawn in the CQC’s report following the visit to the home on March 3, 2020.

The special measures status means the regulator will keep the home under review and, if it does not cancel the provider’s registration, it will re-inspect within six months to check for improvements.

You will find most of these homes are like this all over the country its only because they arrived unexpected to inspect this home which should happen in all homes spot checks .
.
As for lack of staff same goes for our hospital when I was in there not long ago one staff to do 15 patients taking patients to the toilet changing all the beds etc .

Some staff do work a lot of hours in these homes up to 12 hour shifts and are hard workers you get some avoid doing work where they can get away with it putting it on to other workers that have a conscience. Agency staff get paid more.

What a lot of people dont realise in most homes these carers not only care for the clients they have to do the cleaning of the building vacing cooking washing drying putting clients clothes away then one key worker carer has up to 3 clients to care for having to clean their 3 seperate bed rooms belonging to the clients of whom they care for as well as getting them up from bed showering 3 clients one at a time dressing them and changing them if soiled then have to clean the bathroom after then take them in for breakfast etc.

Then they can be attacked my relation has been attacked many times by mental clients even having to end up at the hospital herself one that likes to try and gorge your eyes out then a 6ft6" heaverly built guy who hammered her head with his fist who likes kicking out back windows of cars to escape. The staff are not allowed to touch them to defend themselves. All this on a minium wage no thanks.
More staff is needed with less hours for them as it is draining work imo.
Cleaning the building or the clients rooms should not be a part of the carerers job.
