An investigation has been launched after a family sat through a funeral with the wrong body.

The funeral was held at Canley Crematorium in November.

But while the family said their final goodbyes, they had no idea the body inside the coffin was not that of their loved one.

The incorrect coffin was swapped last minute before cremation took place.

CoventryLive can now exclusively reveal that checks supposed to be done before the service were not carried out or were done so incorrectly.

As a result, nobody noticed that the wrong coffin was brought to the service.

Staff at Canley Crematorium, which is owned and managed by Coventry City Council, noticed the mistake after the funeral service ended.

A spokesman for the council confirmed a disciplinary process is underway in relation to two members of council staff.

The funeral directors for the service - Henry Ison & Sons, which has three Coventry businesses on Binley Road, Allesley Old Road and Daventry Road - have given their "sincere apologies" to the family, who have now been made aware of the situation.

A spokesman for the funeral directors said: "We have spoken with the family concerned and given our sincere apologies for the error, which was realised before the cremation took place.

"We are conducting a full investigation to ensure such an error cannot happen again."

I wonder how many other times this has happened and not been discovered or disclosed?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
