A General Election candidate from Coventry has spoken out after her car was targeted by vandals.

Clare Golby was canvassing with her team on Saturday when her car was defaced with offensive language and a Swastika.

The incident has been reported to the police.

The most chilling thing about the incident, said Ms Golby, was that only her car was targeted – those belonging to members of her team were not defaced.

“It’s not about the words, or the pictures they left on the car,” she said. “It’s the fact that I was targeted, the idea that someone was watching and knew which car belonged to me.”

On the latest incident, Ms Golby said: “I’ve had people getting quite sweary at me before, it’s just something certain people feel they are entitled to do. But this is the first time it’s moved into something physical, it’s the first time my car has been targeted.”

She added that she was ‘fully prepared’ for such an incident, but said that it does impact her family, who worry about her.

“I’m not a coward. If someone is swearing at me in the street I’m not likely to run away. But people do worry. There’s always going to be someone who’s bigger than me. And being a woman, there’s other things you have to take into consideration as well.

“My husband and close family do worry about me.”

Ms Golby added: “It’s so nasty. All I’m doing is representing my views. I’m not forcing my views onto everyone – and they should not expect me to be forced to shut up.

“This was different because it was aimed at me personally. The most concerning thing is not what they put on my car, but the fact that someone had been watching, and paying enough attention to know which one was my car. Other cars parked next to mine had campaign literature on display, but they weren’t touched.”

She was interviewed as a 'Labour supporter of Jeremy Corbyn' by the BBC a few years ago. That may have something to do with it?
