Nuneaton tip workers to take drastic measures due to violent visitors

Staff at Nuneaton's tip have been issued body cameras following a raft of threats and violence from residents dropping off their rubbish.

The kit, similar to that used by police officers, will be rolled out to all people who work at Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC) across Warwickshire, including at Judkins.

It is hoped the equipment will act a deterrent to those turning to violence at the sites although it has been stressed that they will only be switched on to record when needed.

A spokesperson for Warwickshire County Council said: "This new safety measure is to improve the health and safety of all site users and site staff.

“There have been a number of incidents of aggression at our household waste and recycling centres (HWRC) including threats of violence, which have led to the police being called on a number of occasions.

"These body worn cameras will serve to reduce and prevent verbal and physical abuse of site staff and allow them to better execute their job.

"They will also help with other crime prevention and will improve the experience of all site visitors."

The body warn camera trial has been taking place at Princes Drive HWRC but other sites will receive the equipment this summer.

Having witnessed an incident caught on body camera I suspect it will make no difference whatsoever.
