An 82-year-old pedestrian has died after being struck by a marked police car in Coventry.

The man was hit by the vehicle, which was responding to an emergency call, on Walsgrave Road at 2218 BST on Thursday.

He was taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, but died just after 2300 BST.

West Midlands Police have referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission for investigation.

'Distressing time'

Coventry Police Commander Steve Glover said: "I'm deeply saddened by this incident.

"Our thoughts are with the gentleman's family and friends at what is a distressing time for all involved.

"Police family liaison officers are comforting the man's wife and helping her in any way they can.

"The two officers in the police vehicle involved in the collision were treated for shock. Both are extremely upset."
